Relaxation therapy is a broad term used to describe a number of techniques that promote stress reduction, the elimination of tension throughout the body, and a calm and peaceful state of mind. Stress and tension have been linked to many ailments. They can also trigger a number of distinct physical symptoms, including nausea, headache, stomachache, high fever, fatigue, muscle pain, diarrhea, etc. Relaxation therapists have been asked to reduce the incidence and severity of stress-related diseases and disorders in many clients or patients. In this article, the author presents a new relaxation method called hisui technique. It is one of imagery techniques, and consists of four steps: (1) sitting on an armchair in an upright position; (2) visualizing clear and serene waves on the beach; (3) introjecting those waves into the body; and (4) incorporating oneself into a sea. With numerous vignettes the author also notes various remarks about how the therapist utilizes the technique in the therapeutic setting. Detailed clinical material is then presented from two clients, both of whom had stress-related psychological and physical symptoms. One of the biggest benefits of using the technique is its availability. Although some initial training in the technique may be required, it is accessible to virtually everyone regardless of his or her education, age, sex, or intellectual level. It is through the combination of imaginal and verbal modes that the effect of hisui technique makes its profound impact. Clinical experience will guide the therapist in balancing the use of imaginal and verbal work.
