A male freshman in high school, who had been a dutiful and hurried child, came into weekly therapy. His problems ostensibly started after he was six months into the tenth grade in 1980s, when he stayed home from school with a headache and stomach ache, and then refused to go to a public high school after that. Instead, he watched television and listened to music. Both of his parents were deeply distressed and ashamed of his nonattendance, and reluctantly let him go to a psychotherapist when they were so advised. The main issue that emerged in sessions was his subterranean struggle with his mother over his schooling, who had ruled out a private school he wanted to go to with his friends. After a lot of difficult twists and turns, accepting his parents' offer, he finaly transfered to another private high school located in another prefecture. In short, he could manage to find a way out of his troubles. In the paper, the author, who had related to him in an empathic manner with little advice or interpretation, examined the ways and means to cope with psychological obstacles created by his overbearing mother.
