There are two forms in most nouns, one for the singular and one for the plural. And they have two formations: regular plural formation and irregular plural one. Among irregular plurals, however, there are several kinds of special plural, including Unchanged Plural, Mutation Plural, and Double Plural. Much of this paper is concerned with these plurals: how they were in Old English, Middle English and how they are in Modern English. The principal aim is to investigate the transition of meanings and usages of plural nouns from Old English to Modern English, focusing on Chaucer's language and vocabulary. Finally I would like to show that Chaucer's English has already determined most of the modern English usages of plural nouns, despite some small differences of detail.
