Elizabeth Gaskell's novella, 'My Lady Ludlow', has not been rated as one of the author's best works. Critics point out trivial mistakes in the novella. That may be reasonable criticism, but it is another fact that they place a low value on the novella as they have not grasped the theme of it. 'My Lady Ludlow' deals with the fall of the landed old family and it is the theme of the novella, though it twists halfway through the story and vanishes at the end of it. At first Lady Ludlow has features of a falling landlord, as landlords in 'Clopton Hall' and 'Morton Hall' or Squire Hamley in Wives and Daughters has. In Hanbury Lady Ludlow's way of life is old-fashioned and she can never ride on a wave of modernization in the early nineteenth century. She is not, however, thoroughly ruined and is helped eventually by two legacies left to her. As a result, though the theme of 'My Lady Ludlow' is the fall of a landlady, the leading character never falls. This is a contradiction which comes from the author's compassion on Lady Ludlow. If the landlord does not fall, he or she, like landlords in 'The Moorland Cottage,' Cranford, Ruth, 'The Old Nurse's Story,' 'The Squire's Story,' 'The Doom of the Griffiths,' 'The Half-Brothers,' and 'Crowley Castle' and Lord and Lady Cumnor in Wives and Daughters, should have an egoistic nature. Lady Ludlow does not. This contradiction causes the complexity of the story. And yet 'My Lady Ludlow' is an interesting story which may be included in the author's well-wrought works dealing with the fall of a landlord.
