Hanbury is getting more and more governed by the principles of the French Revolution. Lady Ludlow, lady of the manor, and her tenants gradually get out of their feudalistic ways of life. The Hanburys must fall to ruin because of old and inefficient management of the Hanbury estates. Persons who gain power in Hanbury instead are a flourishing and wealthy ex-baker from Birmingham, Mr. Brooke, and his fellows. Mr. Brooke has earned money in trade in town and has come to settle here, in agricultural Hanbury. It means that feudalistic and irrational ideas are swept away from Hanbury, but that the unrelenting logic of merchants prevails throughout Hanbury. 'My Lady Ludlow' shows another side of the change which has taken place in Hanbury. It is a movement brought to the village by Mr. Gray. He is a new rector and displays great enthusiasm for spreading education. Though at first Lady Ludlow objects to his idea, she makes a concession to his demand and allows a schoolhouse to be built on her estates. Mr. Gray is democratic in any other subjects. To take a single example, he falls in love with Miss Bessy who is a natural child and was raised by Miss Galindo. He gets married to Miss Bessy at the end of the novella. The author presents through these changes of Hanbury the profound influence exerted on Lady Ludlow. Lady Ludlow becomes at last a final feudalistic landowner. Thus 'Morton Hall' is succeeded in the main theme-the declining manor family-by the novella, 'My Lady Ludlow', and the theme is to be handed over to the author's last novel, Wives and Daughters.
