This paper has two parts. In the first part, three hypotheses are reviewed. These are: (1) the Common-Store hypothesis, which states that semantic information of two languages is stored in common in the brain; (2) the Separate-Store hypothesis, which states, conversely, that semantic information of two languages is stored separately; and (3) the Overlapping-Distributed Memory hypothesis, which synthesizes the first two in claiming that some information from two languages is stored in commmon while other information is stored separately. These three hypotheses appear to have been proposed to account for mature bilinguals, as none of them discusses early storage, such as might operate in the early stages of bilingual language acquisition. This paper goes on to speculate what such incipient forms might be like, using data from stages characteristic of simultaneous bilingual language acquisition, namely the Unified Language stage and the Language Separation stage.
