Research Work on the Water Quality and Socio-Natural Environment in Monobe River Basin

Water quality of the Monobe River which has three dams and two weirs, were investigated 24 times from 2^<nd> of July to 30^<th> of December, 2002. The investigated water quality is water temperature, EC, DO, pH and turbidity by portable water quality checker. Totally eight points were selected for investigation. At three dams, namely Nagase Dam, Yoshino Dam and Suita Dam, vertical distributions of water quality were investigated. In this paper, seasonal variation of water quality, and changes in water quality from upstream to downstream points are mainly reported. The following points have become clear. (1) Water temperature goes up as river flows down from upstream to downstream. (2) Turbidity rapidly increases after successive hard rain. (3) Water temperature and EC drops down by large amount of rainfall. (4) DO of the midstream rapidly drops down and turbidity goes up after successive hard rain. (5) EC is considered to be affected by the population and agricultural lands, but, in this research, this points is not so clear and on the midstream, no substantial change of EC were observed. (6) Storage capacity of dams affects the water temperature and EC. (7) DO and pH values are greater at stream surface, but relatively lower at the dam surface. The reason that dam water has relatively lower pH than stream water is considered to be dam's capability of floodwater storage. (8) Nagase Dam, the largest among three dams, has the maximum capability of flood peak cut. (9) The inflow of the downstream dams are highly affected by discharge of upstream dam both in quality and quantity.
