In this paper, a number of problematic pulmonic consonants which cause difficulty for Japanese speakers of English are identified. Japanese Language Approximations (JLA's), similar segments or phonemes which Japanese speakers often substitute when speaking English, are also classified and discussed. Through applying a technique utilizing a series of minimal contrasts, a systematic way of improving the pronunciation of difficult articulations for Japanese speakers of English is demonstrated.
