The DNA sequence coding for 18S rRNA (18S rDNA) of the medaka Oryzias latipes was amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and its nucleotide sequence was determined. The sequence was compared with the 18S rDNA sequences of the other vertebrates including a fish Oreochromis esculentus (tilapia), which showed the highest sequence homology to the medaka, a frog Xenopus laevis, a chicken Gallus gallus and the humans Homo sapiens. A phylogenetic tree was constructed from the sequences and showed expected relationships.
