キーワード : Optimality Theory constraints syllable simplification 抄録 : This paper discusses the simplification of complex English syllable onsets and codas by intermediate Japanese EFL learners, in particular the effect of markedness often conceived as part of the innate endowment provided by Universal Grammar. The simplification strategies are accounted for within Optimality Theory, in which the learner evaluates the set of candidate surface representations corresponding to a given input against the surface constraints of the first language at the initial stage, and develops second language grammar through the gradual demotion of a markedness constraint. The study also argues that markedness effects that are not visible in either the native or the target language become visible in the interlanguage data.
