R Dropping and R Insertion in Received Pronunciation : A New Look at an Old Problem

The proposed analysis makes an explanatorily desirable connection between R Dropping on the one hand and R Insertion on the other; the two phonological processes are compelled by distinct and competing markedness constraints but involve a surface violation of the featural faithful constraints, namely Ident (COR), Max and Dep. The concept of symmetrical identity within COT provides the key to the resolution of this dilemma within OT.
