High thermal efficiency of a Stirling engine depends on thermal performance of a regenerator. In a regenerator, wire gauzes are packed as a heat reservoir. Determining heat transfer performance of such regenerative heat exchanger units or surfaces, a single-blow, maximum-slope transient technique is a typical method and has been commonly applied. A modified single-blow technique developed by Liang et al. uses a very simple apparatus and can be applied to heat exchange systems of any NTU values. So, we tested this method for determining heat transfer coefficients of packed wire gauzes. In case of 150 mesh wire gauze, measured response curve of exit air temperature quite agrees with calculated curve, and heat transfer coefficients obtained by this method also agree with data reported by Hamaguchi, et al.. However, in case of 50 mesh wire gauze, whose each wire is thick, both response curves do not agree with each other. We consider that temperature distribution in a thick wire is not uniform and the assumption of lumped-heat-capacity analysis does not hold good.
