The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the theoretical relationship between John Dewey's concept of experience and activity theory derived from Russian philosopher and psychologists. In this paper, I try to outline the meaning of mediation of our human activity and experience. In the earlier part, activity theory is retraced. Yrjo Engestrom and Raijo Miettinen, who are internationally known as Finnish prominent researchers on Russian psychology and philosophy, have developed (Cultural-Historical) activity theory. As Lev Vygotsky claimed in later 1920's, human activities don't operate in a vacuum environment, and not as direct reactions to their surroundings, but are mediated by the cultural artifacts as tools and symbols. In the latter, Dewey's theory of mediated experience is examined. Imagination is the medium of reflective experiences. When inquiry as reflection starts with disequilibrium, imagination functions through that reconstructive process for recovery. Conflicts and contradictions in human experiences and activities play transformative, definitive role. Seemingly odd, according to Dewey and activity theory, disharmony creates and enriches human growth (development) in a meaningful, fruitful way.
