Pernis apivorus japonicus, subsp nov. Pernis apivorus orientalis (nec TACZANOWSKI), HAETERT Vog. pal. Fauna, Band II, p. 1183(pt.)(1914). Pernis orientalis (nec TACZ.),SWANN, Syn. List Accipitress, pt.III,p.176(pt.) (1912). Swcond ed. Characters.-Similar to Pernis apivorus orientalis TACZ. from East Siberia, but the wing and tail are apparently shorter. The length of the wing ranges from 423-432 mm. (in males) and 430 (juv.)-447 mm. (in females) and that of the tail ranges from 248-272 mm. (in males) and 261-273 mm. (in females). It also differs from the typical apivorus of Europe in having the middle throat always with a distinct longitudinal blackish mark continuing to a black band which extending round the lower throat, thus making a "w" shaped mark. The length of wing is on an average longer than that of apivorus. (10 specimens examined.) Type.-Adult male, Atataka-mura, Province Shinano, Hondo, Jpan, 18. ix.1911. T. TAKAYAMA coll. N.KURODA coll. no.580. Measurenment of the type male.-Wing, 425; tail, 248 ; tarsus, 62 ; culmen without cere, 22.5 mm. Habitat.-This Honey-Buzzard breeds in the Central Mountains of Hondo (Prov. Shinano, Prov, Kai, Nikko, etc.), and probably also occurs in North Kiusiu (Nagasaki). A male from Formosa has also a shorter wing, which is 415 mm. in length. The wing is very short as in two examples from China which wings measures 402 and 404 mm. in length respectively (cf. KLEINSCHMIDT HARTRRT SWANN). No Korean examples have as yet come to my hand. Remarks.-The ground colour of the underparts varies with individuals and ranges from whitish, buffy and dark rufous to dark brown (melanistic example). The last strain probably occurs rarer than the rest. The broad bands on tail feathers are usually three in number, but very rarely (no. 9097, ♂ad. in my collection) they are replaced by the irregular linear markings with no bands at all. The young of the first year has the head all round white washed with buffy on occiput and nape and with narrow brown shaft lines ; a faint indication of a "w" shaped mark on throat (no. 9096, ♀juv., obtained in July, 1924).
