Speech sounds with significant spectral degradation can be intelligible by using temporal amplitude envelope cues. Previous studies have shown that noise-vocoded speech sound (NVSS) where spectral information is degraded become intelligible after a simple training. However, lexical knowledge may also contribute to recognition of speech with reduced spectral resolutions. In the present study, the lexical contribution to intelligibility of words with different familiarity was investigated. The spectral details of words were smeared by noise-vocoding technique, in which filtered noise bands were modulated by the amplitude envelope extracted from the same spectral bands in speech. The word familiarity was divided into four levels. Also, an effect of an instructive difference on word intelligibilities was examined to restrain individual differences in accessibility to mental lexical knowledge. In addition, word intelligibilities of speech with background noise were examined in the same way to compare to those of NVSS. Our data showed that the higher the word familiarity, the higher the intelligibility was. The word familiarity appeared to affect on the recognition of NVSS because subjects showed tendency to perceive familiar words. The ways of instruction also made a difference in the NVSS word recognition. These findings may have implied that the knowledge of word plays an important role to recognize NVSS words by utilizing amplitude envelope cues.
