The Weekly Times (The Okinawa Times weekly English edition) was first published on Monday, May 14, 1990. This paper deals with sentential examples of abbreviations (initialisms, acronyms, short forms, jargon, symbols, and others included) which appeared in The Weekly Times during the period Monday, May 14, 1990 through Saturday, October 4, 2003. The purposes of this paper are : (1) to find the total number of abbreviations, (2) to comment on the distribution of abbreviations from<<A>>to<<Z>>, and (3) bo have the people who are concerned with 'Current English' recognize and understand the significance of the abbreviations. The findings are as follows : (1) The total number of abbreviations is 396. (2) No abbreviations have been found with initial letter<<X>>or<<Z>>and only one with initial letter<<Q>>(0.3%). Abbreviations using initial letter<<A>>were most numerous, representing 8.8% of the total (35/396). The second most common initial letter was<<O>>representing 8.6% of the total (34/396), followed by<<A>>6.8% or 27, etc. It can be concluded that the abbreviations are coined in response to the maxims-"Necessity is the mother of invention." and "Need will have its course." They are created by the need to enable The Weekly Times journalists to finish their jobs speedily, economically, and to make more space available for more important information to the readers. Due to space limitations, abbreviations are indispensable in the newspaper.
