The English language has become an international language through Britain's colonial expansion and emergence of a big power, America, along with the development of science and technology in these countries. Today, 320-380 million people speak English as a native language, 300-500 million speak the language as a second language, and 500-1, 000 million speak it as a foreign language. The worldwide spread of English has resulted in the tension between the international use of English with mutual intelligibility and local use with endonormative creativity with less international intelligibility. With the frequency, density and importance of its use in the wider regions, however, several standard Englishes will be formed in the future-Euro-English, Latin English, Asian English, Arab English, and African English besides Mother-tongue English. Overarching these standard Englishes will be EIL (English as an International Language), which is a loose league of varieties of English spoken and understood by the educated speakers of any variety, native speakers or not. EIL is characterized by shared grammar and basic vocabulary; linguistic generalization, regularization, commonality; and sociocultural neutrality in language use. The idea of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) implies that English belongs to its native speakers and we learn and use the language as a `foreign' speaker. We need to change the inferiority-bound idea to EIL (English as an International Language), where we use the language as an `international' speaker on an equal footing with the native speakers of English. As a speaker of EIL, we can contribute to the promotion and improvement of EIL since we are not affected by English's localization.
