A "reporting verb" is a verb that is found in the main clause of a direct narration sentence, such as 'said' in the sentence 'I said, "Hello."' This paper aims to categorize and study reporting verbs that have occured in American elementary school textbooks for the 1st through the 6th grades. In addition, it shows that the number of reporting verbs that explain the register of reported speech reaches its peak in the 3rd grade and then decreases, while ones that explain the function of the reported speech increase constantly. Also, in contrast to the EFL learner's approach, many verbs with narrower meaning potentials are used from the early grades.
