Geohistorical significance of the Kuzumaki and the Taro tectonic lines, the major tectonic lines of the Northern Kitakami Massif and the geologic character of the tectonic provinces of the same massif are discussed. The Pre-Miyakoan (Lower Cretaceous) older rocks in the northern Kitakami massif are classified on the basis of geologic structure and geological age as follows (Fig. 1) ; (1) North Kitakami Belt : mainly consists of the Paleozoic including the Permian and the Carboniferous? rocks. -(Kuzumaki Tectonic Line)-(2) Iwaizumi Belt : mainly consists of the Lower-Middle Mesozoic including the Upper Triasssic, Jurassic-Pre-Miyakoan Lower Cretaceous? -(Taro Tectonic Line)- (3) Taro Belt : mainly consists of the Middle-Upper Mesozoic including the Upper Jurassic-Pre-Miyakoan Lower Cretaceous. The distribution of the Paleozoic strata trending nearly NW-SE is restricted to the west side of the Kuzumaki Tectonic Line, and the Mesozoic strata of nearly NNW-SSE to the east side. The Pre-Miyakoan Lower Cretaceous Harachiyama Effusive Rocks are distributed along the eastern coastal area (Figs. 2, 3). The conspicuous contrast in the distributions and the structural trends between the Paleozoic strata and the Mesozoic strata is the most striking feature of the geologic structure of the area studied and the trends of the granodioritic intrusions and the folded structures of the Mesozoic rocks are thought to suggest the close relationship between them. As shown in Fig. 4, the situation of the development of the Pre-Neogene Tertiary rocks in the Hayachine Tectonic Belt and the Northern Kitakami Massif seems to suggest the gradual shift of the sedimentary basin during the Paleozoic to the Mesozoic Era from west to east. Probably, the activity along the Kuzumaki and the Taro tectonic lines had an important role in the geologic process mentioned above.
