The mechanical characteristics of steel in the elastic-plastic state are closely related to the fracture and notch strength of the members made of steel. At present, to know these characteristics is not so easy, and if it becomes easy it will have a great technological significant. It has been widely known that stretcher strains corresponds to the yield stress of carbon steel. The existence of stretcher strains can be discerned by the naked eye. If this phenomenon is utilized, the mechanical characteristics in the elastic-plastic state of carbon steel should be able to be apprehended. As for the carbon steel strips, of which the surfaces were smoothly finished, and which have a pair of semicircular notches respectively, the relation between the increase of load and the form of the striped patterns generated and propagated on their surfaces was examined not only by the curves of a self recorder belong to the material testing machine, but by the naked eye. It was confirmed that the mechanical characteristics in the elastic-plastic state of carbon steel strips could be apprehended partially by utilizing stretcher strains.
