The elucidation of the elastoplastic behavior of teeth base of a loaded gear is important when the fatigue strength or the bending strength of the teeth is studied. Many reports on this problem have been made; however, there is no report based upon the observation of elastoplastic behavior as observed by the naked eye. This report shows markings at the base of the teeth when a standard spur gear made of low carbon steel was loaded with torque. The following results were obtained: (1) Stretcher-strains appeared at the fillet of the base of the teeth and gradually propagated with increasing torque. (2) The position where stretcher-strains appeared at the base of teeth was on the weakest section as determined by the 30° tangent method. (3) Basic data were obtained when stretcher-strain phenomena were utilized for the elucidation of the elastoplastic behavior of the base of teeth in a spur gear subjected to a static load.
