A brief review of the advancement of physical and chemical concepts in photosynthesis which has been made in theoretical studies is given. The subject is limited to a time scale covering the various steps from photon absorption to the appearance of water decomposition and oxygen evolution that is the first chemical reaction in photosynthesis. Emphasis is made on the importance of quantum mechanical approach, which can lead to a deep understanding of the molecular mechanism of the conversion of sunlight into useful chemical energy in green plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria. This report also includes a theoretical conjecture that an active site of manganese protein in photosynthetic water decomosition should be a binuclear Mn complex with two bridged Mn cations in a form of "next-door" model. Contents. I Introduction. II Photonabsorption, Exciton transfer, and Exciton trapping. III Charge separation at reaction center and Electron tranfer. IV Water decomposition and Oxygen evolution. V Conclusion.
