Scrap-germanium, produced in the process of manufacturing, diode and transistor contains high-content Ge which amounts to more than 90 percent and low-content scrap-Ge which amounts to less than 10 percent. This report concerns with xperiments to recover pure Ge from low-content scrap-Ge more economically. Ge is contained in low-content scrap-Ge in the forms of Ge and GeO_2. An Experiment was done to establsh the method of analysis of Ge, and the method of decomposition of scrap-Ge concerning composition analysis has been tested. Two kinds of low-content scrap-Ge were dealt with : one is dark grey of colour which contains 9.1% Ge, and the other is greyish white which contains 3.4% Ge. The analysis of Ge was carried out in colorimetric analysis. The recovery of Ge from these samples was done in the following process. The sample was pulverized and then roasted by heating 300°〜700℃, 1〜5 hrs. in air. Ge in the sample turned into GeO_2. And GeO_2 was dissolved in 6N-HCl and the resultant crude GeCl_4 distilled. In the purification of the crude GeCl_4, the author employed rectification of the crude GeCl_4. The pure GeCl_4 was hydrolyzed in distilled water to GeO_2, which was then washed and dried. Scrupulous cleanliness was essential at all stages to ensure against contamination of the final product. GeO_2 was reduced to a powdered metal by heating to 650℃ in atmosphere of Hydrogen. The powdered metal was melted at 1,100℃ in inert atmosphere to form billets. The yield of Ge from low-content scrap-Ge was more than 80%.
