The atomic size effect of constituent elements on the metallic glass formability has been discussed by introducing the atomic volume mismatch evaluated from the cube of the atomic radius of solvent and solute. The product of the atomic volume mismatch and the minimum solute concentration necessary to form a stable glassy phase was empirically found to be a nearly constant value of 0.10 in various binary alloys and some ternary alloys known as glass forming system. On the basis of such empirical correlation, the optimum solute concentration for good glass formability has also been discussed at phenomenological level using the results of Fe-Si-B-Cr quaternary alloys as an example.
