The calculation of the internal friction is performed for one-dimensional multi-well potentials in which elements of anelastic strain (diffusing particles) redistribute themselves in response to the applied stress. Three different potentials are considered : case 1, equal depth wells ; case 2, deep wells at both ends ; case 3, a high potential barrier at the centre. In case 3 the relaxation spectrum splits into two peaks with the increase in the height of the barrier at the centre. For cases 2 and 3 are derived the expressions for relaxation times ; the importance of the Brownian motion in the determination of the relaxation time is emphasized when the "reaction" proceeds by passing-through unequal multiwell potentials. The present result is directly applicable to the interpretation of internal frictions due to the motion of dislocation kinks in the presence of impurity atoms.
