Single crystals of CaFe_4O_7 were grown by keeping a pellet of the sample at 1220℃. Lattice constants obtained by X-ray analysis of the crystals were a=6.0 A and c=32.2 A. The Curie temperature of CaFe_4O_7 was found to be 423°K and the magnetization at 77°K and 9.5 kOe was 6.2 emu/g. Mossbauer pattern of the powdered single crystal was composed of two components with different Curie temperatures, which was interpreted as showing that the single crystals contained an extra phase. High temperature heat-treatment of CaFe_4O_7 under high pressure was tried, which resulted in the formation of a new phase with an unknown crystal structure.
