Infrared Free Carrier Faraday Rotation of p-Type PbSe

The free carrier Faraday rotation in p-type PbSe was measured in the wavelength range from 4.5μ to 14μ at 295°K. The value of the hole mass was found to vary monotonically from 0.091 m_0 to 0.113 m_0 as the carrier concentration increased from 4.1×10^<17>cm<-3> to 6.3×10^<18>cm^<-3>. The nonparabolicity of the valence band can be described in terms of the Cohen's nonellipsoidal model with the parameters m_t=0.074 (±0.003)m_0, K=1.7±0.2 and E_g=0.27 (±0.01)eV. It was found in p-type PbSe that the wavelength dependence of the free carrier Faraday rotation has a constant term in addition to the usual λ^2-dependence as Mitchell et al. had pointed out in PbS. The value of the constant term was estimated for the above range of the carrier concentration.
