An experimental method is described for measuring the magneto-absorption and the Faraday rotation simultaneously in a single sweep of a pulse magnetic field. A Bitter type solenoid made of 100 sheets of copper plates produced the field of 260 kGs at the center of its axial bore of 14 mm in diameter when the 2, 000μF condenser bank was charged to 2, 100V and was discharged through the solenoid. A thin plate of the semiconductor sample was sandwiched between a pair of polaroid sheets which were oriented at 45°with respect to each other. A pair of quartz optical pipes were used for minimizing the disturbance from the bubbling of the liquid nitrogen, where the magnet with the sample was immersed. The interband magneto-optical effects in GaSe were measured as an example for the use of the above technique.
