This study aimed : 1) to develop a test which is available to estimate human working capacity, the isopower output (P), as the function of the maximal endurance time (Tlim) in an exhaustive pedaling exercise, 2) to establish the test both from test-retest reliability and relations with physiological valiables, and 3) to apply the test on the individual training with special attention to the training effects. Male and female college athletes took part in these experiments. The present findings are as follows. (1) The test was named "Isopower Endurance Pedaling (ISOPEP) Test". In this test, P was expressed as a hyperbolic function of Tlim when Tlim was longer than or equal to one minute, i. e., with Tlim≧1min, P = a/Tlim+b……(Equation A), and as a logarithmic function of Tlim when Tlim was less than or equal to one minute, i. e., with Tlim≦1 min, P =-c・log Tlim +d……(Equation B), where a, b, c and d were individual values. These equations seemed to well describe the "Power Edurance Capacity (PEC" in each subject. (2) The test-retest coefficients of correlation in the individual values were significant (n=11, a, b…p<0.001 ; c, d・・・p<0.05), showing the reliability of PEC. There were also found the significant correlations (n=14, p<0.001) between the power of Tlim 0.1 min : (c+d) and the maximal power obtained with a force-velocity test, and between the power of Tlim 5 min : (a/5+b) and the maximal oxgen uptake as well. Therefore, the power of Tlim 0.1 min was supposed to indicate the anaerobic working capacity, while the power of Tlim 5 min the aerobic. The Tlim to P relation was similar to that between Tlim and energy expenditure obtained from oxgen consumption, and suggested the capacity of physical energy production system. (3) After the interval training with ISOPEP, the individual values : b in Equation A increased 10.8%, and a 31.1%, and the distance of 12 min run lengthened 7.1%. The results strongly suggested the ISOPEP test and PEC estimation examined in this study are useful for the training of competitive athletes. (Res. J. Phys. Educ., Chukyo Univ., 30, 35-51, 1988.)
