Some varieties of hydrated ferric oxides altered from pure Japanese pyrrhotite consist chiefly of goethite, rarely containing hydrous hematite and amorphous hydrated ferric oxides. There are several kinds of goethite differing in crystallinity ; the less the H_2O(+) content and the higher the dehydration temperature of combined water, the higher the crystallinity. It is not rare to find more than two varieties of goethite of different crystallinity coexisting in one ore specimen. The oxidation process of pyrrhotite can be expressed by the following schema : Pyrrhotite→Pyrite Marcasite→Iron sulfates→Goethite〓Hydrous hematite But, under some specific oxidation environments, pyrite, marcasite, and iron sulfates may not be formed.
