The life period of a bubble formed at the liquid surface is considered to depend upon the decrease of thickness of the liquid film between the two layers caused by draining and evaporation. During the first stage of the life of a bubble, draining is the most important factor in diminishing its thickness. Therefore, the flow of liquid in a vertical capillary tube was theoretically considered in order to contribute to the study of the downward flow in a lamella of liquid between the surface films of a bubble. The equation of flow of liquid in a vertical capillary tube was theoretically derived and the time in which the liquid surface was displaced to certain height was discussed. It was assumed that the surface tension, viscosity and density of the liquid were constant. But the conditions are different when a small amount of surface-active substance, such as a frother, is added in water. As the variation of the surface tension of solutions with concentration had already been treated, the variation with concentration of the viscosity and of the density of solutions were considered. The new empirical formulae were developed for the relations between the viscosity and concentration arid between the density and concentration of solutions. These formulae were satisfactorily applied to the aqueous solutions of ethyl and of n-propyl alcohols. By use of these equations the flow of aqueous solution of a surface-active substance in a vertical capillary tube was considered. As the equations obtained were very much complicated and it was difficult to analyse the general feature of the flow, numerical calculations were made for a special case taking ethyl alcohol as an example. It was pointed out that the time of capillary flow down of a definite distance of the aqueous solution of a surface-active substance showed maximums at certain concentrations and it might probably have some connection with the stability of a bubble or a froth system.
