Rod crystals of ZnS were prepared by the gas reaction (Frerichs) and the sublimation (Kremheller) methods. The former method was capable of growing crystals of nearly 8×0.3×0.1 mm from pure Zn metal kept at 1, 100℃ for only half an hour in H_2S gas atmosphere. The latter method enabled us to obtain crystals (5-8 mm in length and 0.3-1 mm in sectional diameter) from ZnS powder kept at 1, 220℃ for 8 hours in an inert gas stream. It was found that relatively large crystals grew under steady condition at just above sublimation temperature. Crystals obtained by the sublimation method displayed electroluminescence at excitation of both ac and dc, without any activator. The growth conditions of needle, twin and ribbon crystals were also discussed.
