To elucidate the course of lead coming into the cathode zinc, a comparison was made with the lead content of zinc deposited on two cathodes in the same cell, of which one was enclosed in an unglazed cylindrical alumina diaphragm and the other was directly immersed in an electrolyte suspending a reasonable amount of lead peroxide particles. An electrolyte solution was forcibly circulated through the diaphragm to prevent the growth of difference between the solution constituents, especially the lead ion concentration, of both sides of the diaphragm. Distribution of the lead between the ionic lead deposition and the occlusion of lead peroxide particle was determined by comparing the results from these two cathodes. The ratio of lead caused by the lead ion deposition on the total amount of lead in cathode zinc was much higher than was expected. Thus it was seen that we had to pay attention to the ionic deposition of lead in solution as much as to the occlusion of lead in suspension.
