This is an essay on the life of Yoshio Akutagawa and his only collection of tankas, "Tsubana". Yoshio Akutagawa was one of the members of the tanka group "Chouon". He was born in Kameyama-city, Mie-prefecture and ran secondhand book stores. First I have introduced the life of Yoshio based on the materials obtained from Masanori Akutagawa, Yoshio's grandson, including the results of my own survey. I have also described Yoshio's circumstances at the time of publication of "Tsubana". Next I have introduced some of his typical tankas, which deal with travels, plants, birds, deaths around him and his hometown, and made comments on them. I presented a part of the letters of thanks to Yoshio from well-known authors and scholars who had received complimentary copies of "Tsubana" and commented on them as well. Finally, it is possible to say that Yoshio's life and his tankas are inseparably related and this collection has attained the ideals of symbolism that the group "Chouon" proposes.
