Scaling indices of beat interval fluctuation recorded from crustacean hearts were obtained by means of detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). We found the significant difference in the scaling index between two types of lobster heart, one connected to the cardiac control center in the brain and the other isolated from the brain. We also analyzed crab heartbeat in normal condition and in terminal condition when the life was coming to an end. The tests revealed that DFA could describe brain-heart interaction quantitatively. We conclude that the scaling index obtained by DFA tells the healthy heart from the sick one on the basis of cardiac physiology.
