Emotion expression and perception are important in interpersonal communication, and they are essential components of social skills. In this paper, studies of emotion expression and emotion perception are reviewed. Studies of facial perception revealed that young children could well recognize a happy face, but could not recognize a sad or frightened face. Similarly, studies of facial expression revealed that young children could make happy and surprized face but could not make frightened or disgusted face well. Vocal perception studies indicated that negative emotion (i.e. anger and disgust) were well recognized. There were small studies in the area of vocal expression, so how vocal tone conveys emotions was not revealed. Finally, research into perception and expression of emotion of people with mental or developmental disorders were reviewed. The necessity for training emotional comunication skills to such people is proposed.
