This study examined the individual difference of cognitive structures for rugby football positions in French high school student rugby players. First, it applies multidimensional scaling (INDSCAL: Individual Differences Scaling) to French cognitive structures of rugby football positions. Thirty-nine players served as subjects. As a result of the analysis of INDSCAL subject space, it was demonstrated that French high school rugby players have different cognitive structures for different rugby football positions. Second, in a cluster analysis, this study divided the thirty-nine subjects into 4 clusters by weight of INDSCAL subjects' space. These clusters were discussed by taking into consideration the present playing position, number of years of playing experience and the method of coaching. It was shown that French high school rugby players' cognitive structures for rugby football positions is not influenced by their present position, but by the method of coaching. Further, the subjects showed balanced cognitive structures in rugby football positions. Therefore, it is necessary for coaches to set a coaching program which is considered enough to create well balanced cognitive structures for beginners.
