Amartya Sen and Aristotle have the same view of humanity. They both recognize that the human being, taking the action, inquires of oneself 'How one should live' like Socrates. Of course, they don't think that the human being always acts such. They recognize that sometimes a person obeys one's own desire for pleasure. But they argue that the desire doesn't completely govern the behavior of a person, and the human being is the existence who judges the value of various ways of life on reason. The foregoing Socratic question is one which exactly awakes the reason. Sen and Aristotle also have the same recognition of well-being. Sen expresses the well-being as the 'capability', and Aristotle expresses the well-being as the 'eudaemonia'. Although those expressions are different, they recognize that the well-being is constructed of various ways of life that human beings value on reason. Therefore, they argue that the well-being isn't identified with the feeling of happiness or any commodities because the former is one element of various ways of life which constitute the well-being, and the latter are useful instruments for the well-being. The first purpose of this paper is to explain the similarity between Sen's theory and Aristotle's theory, and another purpose is to illuminate the relationship between their view of humanity and their recognition of well-being.
