Chikamatsu Monzaemon's Sewa-joururi (contemporary puppet plays) is written only 23 pieces. Others were all Jidai-koururi (traditional puppet plays on histry), which come up to overwhelming number. But we must say, in spite of its extremely small share, they are so popular and important. In this essay, I intended to use several terms that found in a certain private letter addressed to Yokoi Sounai, one of Chikamatsu's friend. This letter is written in his closing years, conperatively long, and tells about his character and conviction held by Chikamatsu himself about how to live. Jidai-joururi always has confrontation between good and bad. But Sewa-Joururi seems to have none like that. I must say, this is a small trial to find something like a tenet, on the assumption that some may be lain as the basis of Sewa-Joururi World.
