In this paper, we propose a new notion on prominent area defined by an index called as comprehensive prominence for identifying urban spatial structure. Not only geometrical prominence but thematic prominence of an irregular area (e.g. administrative unit) is contained in this index. The geometrical prominence is related to geometrical attributes such as size, location and shape of area and the thematic prominence is defined by thematic attributes such as population, the number of business offices etc. In this study, we have drawn out some important regions located along train lines using the comprehensive prominence in Matsudo City of Chiba Prefecture. The area units composing those regions of Matsudo city show high geometrical prominence, have large population and many business offices, are located surround train stations.
