This paper reviews recent literature in EU on the significance, definition, and issues of traditional food in rural development. Traditional food has developed in specific region and history, and been closely related with local ecologies. Traditional food is regarded as an important resource for rural development in EU, because 1) new feasible market of quality food is opening, reflecting consumer's environmental consciousness and other recent social phenomena 2) commoditization of traditional food culture may encourage environmentally sound agriculture 3) traditional food industries have capacity for labor absorption and vitalization of rural economy Recent literature began to address dilemmas between commoditization and nature conservation, and this paper also notes some of those issues.
