A study abroad program is an important part of any high school or university's language education and can lead to benefits in language skills and a wealth of experiences not available at home. It helps build student confidence and enlarges their perspective of the world. Not surprisingly, when combined with the decrease in the cost of international travel, it is clear that it has become a popular way to study English with Japanese people. What this short paper tries to do is to start laying the foundations for serious and sustained research into short-term program evaluation. It takes a look at some of the reasons and advantages for having such programs and some of the problems that students and institutions can encounter. Different methods of evaluation along with one example of quantitative analysis are briefly examined and finally some tips and recommendations for a successful home stay program are given.
