The foreign students' ability of studying in a Japanese university and accommodating themselves to classes is called Academic Japanese. The ability involves not only essential Japanese language and knowledge for daily life, Japanese for general purpose, but also more advanced one needed for researches in specialized fields and the skill in them, Japanese for academic purpose. Many foreign students, however in fact, come to Japan even without the ability of Japanese for general purpose. Those students with the ability of Japanese for academic purpose still have difficulties in studying abroad in Japan, due to lack of enough information and accommodative ability to Japanese culture and society, or due to short of adequate knowledge and skill in their specialized fields. Although those foreign students who apply to the University of Shimane as friendship foreign students should understand Japanese in classes in the university, those accepted in 2000 did not have enough Japanese language abilities. Some severe problems were reported in their daily lives and classes, consequently. A preliminary Japanese language training program before entrance, accordingly, has been executed for the coming four foreign students of the 2001 for two months and a half in Matsue. After the analyses of needs and readiness, the author have planned and scheduled the program, and instructed to the students. The students have achieved prominent developments in Japanese language by this program. Detail courses till the decision of the instruction plan and records of the program were reported in this article. The necessity of this kind of preliminary Japanese language education was stressed in it as well. The author referred to future problems in accepting foreign students to the University of Shimane. Future problems in Japanese education before and after entrance to the university were also mentioned.
