The purpose of this study was to present a new perspective on nursing theory for Japanese nurses who have been studying those developed in the United States. The development of nursing theories started in the United States in the late 1940s and 1950s as nurse leaders began graduate studies in nursing. An examination of representative nursing theories showed nursing is being studied as a human science. Most nursing theories developed in the United States had both scientific and philosophical aspects, and they were grand level theories. At the practice level, nursing theories are defined by a number of social elements such as medical and nursing laws, and people's expectations of nursing. Therefore, it is important for Japanese nurses to develop their own theories. In recent years, the advancement of the information age contributed to the proliferation of nursing research and writings by nurses at all levels of both academic world and work places. Japanese nurses need new nursing theories not only at the practice level, but also at other levels to guide a wide range of nursing research and practice in order to serve the changing needs of nursing and health care.
