In Salome Wilde does not teach lessons or stimulate us to good. Far from that, this text reveals to us the most striking impressions of Salome's sexual desires. Certainly, Wilde's concerns are about the pursuit of beauty and a perfection of being in the imaginative world. But a great deal is left out in this view alone. The stimulus to rethinking this text comes from a dramatic strategy that Wilde tried to employ, which is called 'paradox'. It is precisely this device that renders Salome so powerful. The purpose of this paper is to examine the paradox of Salome, drawing attention to the sexual problems Wilde confronts in his age. A part of the psychoanalytic works of Freud provides a useful critical framework for this drama. Following the way in which characters interact with one another and the emotional conflicts between them, we can find Wilde's own interpretation of the sexual roles in Victorian England and his protest against the narrow-minded people.
