To present, there seems to be very little research dealing with the semantics of learners' particle use. I investigated how learners choose and use particles, using a multiple-choice test focusing on "ga", "wo", "ni", and used a key-word-asking inquiry. The result was that correct answers appeared under the following three conditions : (1) short sentences ; (2) particles in close proximity to the verb ; and (3) the subject is a personal pronoun, or a person's name. The investigation made clear that learners acquire basic rules that "we should use "wo" before verb" ; "wo" before potential verb" ; and "ga" is a particle for emphasis". General findings were that "ni" was used correctly after position noun, direction noun, or object of action ; "wo" was used incorrectly in the case where the verb's transitivity is not so clear ; and "ga" was most used incorrectly, especially with the passive voice or aspect.
