The distribution and ultrastructural features of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) in the guinea pig gastric antrum were studied electronmicroscopically and immunohistochemically. A dense distribution of ICC of Auerbach's myenteric plexus (ICC-AP) was observed in the greater curvature; however, ICC-AP were absent or very sparsely distributed in the lesser curvature. No differences were observed between the lesser and greater curvatures of the myenteric plexus itself. ICC of the circular (ICC-CM) and longitudinal (ICC-LM) muscle layers were observed throughout the muscle coat. ICC were also found at the submucosal border of the circular muscle layer (ICC-SM) in the limited extension of the antrum from the region adjacent to the pyloric sphincter. ICC-SM gradually decreased in number towards the corpus and were not observed in any other parts of the stomach. ICC-SM were classified as the most muscle-like ICC and were characterized by the presence of a basal lamina, many caveolae, bundles of intermediate filaments, rich mitochondria, close contacts between nerve terminals, and the formation of gap junctions with both the same type of cells and smooth muscle cells.
