Recently, many articles examining memorial spaces and practices have been published. Most of these works merely emphasized the public meaning of the war dead and considered the political dynamics of representing it. In other words, research in this field has focused little attention on the private meanings of each war dead. The purpose of this paper is to examine the individual memorial practices of bereaved families of Japanese soldiers or brothers in arms around old battlefields in Okinawa. The present research seeks to determine what represents the departed souls of dead soldiers for their families. In addition, this research identifies how the war bereaved re-encounter their fallen relatives in postwar times. For this purpose, I apply Victor Turner's theory of pilgrimage to individual pilgrimages around battles sites ("Senseki-Jyunrei") from the 1950s to the 1960s, and propose a new concept, "Communitas of the War Bereaved", for analyzing battlefield pilgrimages.
