The words Katawoka, Katayama and Katano appear as place names in old Japanese literature. Various interpretations of the original meanings of these words have been presented, but there is currently no established consensus. In this article I consider examples of the usage of these words from a lexicological point of view and conclude that the prefix Kata in these three words means "remote" or "provincial." When we interpret these words in this way, it enables us to better understand the literary passages in which they are used.
