John Fowles's The Collector is the story of the abduction and imprisonment of Miranda Grey by Frederick Clegg. Clegg makes all the necessary arrangements for his abuduction of her, while he is thinking that it is only pretending. In his diary, he mentions the fiction created in his consciousness twice. This paper discusses that this mentioning produces an ambiguous atmosphere and little sense of timeflow within the text. The first point that I should discuss is that all his arrangements for the abduction can't have its proper meaning unless the abduction of Miranda is realized, because it is mentioned as a fiction. Secondly, what is important is that Clegg acts toward the fullfilment of the abduction within both fictional and real worlds through his fiction. These help to create the indefinite and timeless atmosphere in the text. In addition, Fowles creates the transition between fiction and reality by contrasting the underground and the ground and also by describing the clock time of the real world. In Fowles's novels, the ambiguous world interlaced with fiction and reality play an important role in self discovery.
